CIV
Via Luccoli
Once filled with trees, now filled with shops

GENOA HISTORICAL CENTRE
Very few people know, even among the locals, that Via Luccoli was once a wooded area. But the name of the street derives from the Latin ‘luculus‘, meaning precisely ‘small sacred wood’. It is surprising to imagine as we wander today through this shop-lined alley, that it once was a small dirt path that started in Piazza Soziglia and climbed up steeply through the trees, leading up the wooded hill to the Acquasola gate, in the area now known as Piazza Corvetto.
In the map of the “Wander, Wonder, Shop” project by Confesercenti, you can search for all the businesses that belong to the 8 CIVs, by name or by product category. You can also explore the individual CIVs and the places of interest in that specific area. There’s a legend below the map to help you figure everything out.

THINGS TO SEE
The inner courtyard at 30:
Recently renovated, this building still exudes the enchanting sound of water; a bubbling stream flows from the mouth of a mask. The marble portal, overlooking Via Luccoli and leading to the atrium supported by Doric columns with a 17th-century nymphaeum, is simply beautiful.

CURIOSITIES
The woodland spirit:
Legend has it that a woodland spirit roams Via Luccoli at night. Those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of this spirit disguised as a blond child in a white tunic, are said to be blessed with good luck and serenity. So, keep your eyes open!
Many shops for all tastes:
If you are in Genoa and are looking for the rarest spices, the most extravagant teas, or unexpected soaps – like lettuce soap, for example – or if you want to taste ethnic food from all over the world, don’t miss the vibrant and noisy little alleys of the historical center. You’ll find much more than you could ever expect.
